Decorating weddings and special events over the years, I've often helped clients with other aspects of their events besides the decorating. I want to share that information and advice with you. I also want to highlight other event vendors whose work I like and different local venues. I invite you to ask questions as well.

Attractive Autumn
When someone remarks how dreary Autumn is I ask myself, what are they talking about? Yes, the weather gets cooler and the days shorter as we move towards winter. But what a glorious show nature gives us in that transition! We are treated to an array of beautiful golds, oranges, reds and browns as the leaves turn. All of these vibrant colors can be brought inside to brighten your fall events. Also, along with gorgeous flowers, seasonal elements like gourds, pods and branches can be incorporated for interest. If more subdued decoration is wanted, another approach would be to soften the designs with the addition of warm whites, creams and apricot tones. With either palette, enjoy the bounty!

White Garden Roses!

A Sweet Pea White and Cream Centerpiece |
I love Roses in general, but add beautiful, lush Garden Roses and an arrangement becomes that much lovelier! The name of the ones used in this centerpiece with other Roses and additional flowers is called "Vitality" and has the most amazing scent.

Spring Flowers!
For some the arrival of Spring means using pastel flowers or flowers that are traditionally thought of as Spring flowers, like Tulips, Hydrangea or Lilac. Oftentimes a soft palette is used for weddings in general. Brides are even more inclined to stick with this idea if their wedding is occurring during the Spring months. Of course arrangements using "Spring" flowers in a pastel palette can be lovely, but doing so is certainly not mandatory. You can incorporate "Spring" flowers or not, or even add a few deeper tones for a more vibrant look. Your Spring decorating is all up to you!

Sometimes we even hear from the Mother of the Bride!
"The flowers were absolutely perfect and you were such a pleasure to work with! I appreciate the time you devoted to working with us so that we could stay within our budget. The alternatives you offered met our budget without sacrificing quality. I have attached a few pictures I thought you might like to have. Know that I will certainly recommend you to my friends and family!"
I received this lovely note and the accompanying pictures from the mother of the bride for a wedding we decorated recently. It was very thoughtful of her and I am delighted that she was happy with our work - the Bride and Groom were also pleased with our work! I enjoyed working with this family and also being able to incorporate interesting elements like Succulents and Proteas into the designs!

2014 Philadelphia Flower Show
Went to the Philadelphia Flower Show, which is still inspiring. I wish more people would be open to decorating their events with interesting and different elements, like this stunning vertical garden.

Enjoyed decorating a lovely home for the tour yesterday! Nice to work together with a wonderful group of people to support the Philadelphia Orchestra. It was a great day of food, decor and flowers, of course!

Welcome to Summer!
Summer is here and it's fun to decorate with bright, warm colors - just like the sun!
Here's what the bride had to say about her flowers pictured above.
"Shelby was the first person I met with about flowers for my June wedding. I met with her only a few weeks before the actual event. She was so easy to communicate with throughout those few weeks. I was able to text her when I had a question and ship things directly to her house for my centerpieces. All of the ways she made herself available, made my life so much easier.
The flowers were better than I even pictured. Shelby just totally got my vision and what I wanted. I was able to trust her 100 percent to make it all come together. If you want a personal touch and want to pass off the responsibility of making your reception look amazing, hire Shelby. She knows what she is doing, and that's exactly what you want in a florist."

SHABBY CHIC
Lately many brides have told me that
they want to decorate their weddings in the “Shabby Chic” style.
This is a pretty, romantic style that evokes a “lived in” feel
elevated with beautiful and sometimes slightly weathered vessels and
props. A hallmark of this style is to utilize not just one, but
sometimes an eclectic array of vessels for your centerpieces such as
garden urns or groupings of mason jars, tea tins, mercury glass
vases, etc. Oftentimes, there are assorted props incorporated as
well. For example, an arrangement in a garden urn could be placed on
a stack of old books or perhaps would have Ivy cascading down and
then wrapped around an antique statue. The color palette can be
varied, but is usually a pleasant combination of White, Ivory, Dusty
Rose, Mauve and Blush. In the arrangements, “Silvery” greens,
like Artemisia and Seeded Eucalyptus or even Succulents are nice
additions and enhance the sense of agedness.
One common misconception with this look
is that it can be done inexpensively. To begin, collecting various
vessels and props – your florist might have some – is time
consuming and an obvious expense. Perhaps you have some pieces, maybe
heirlooms, that you would like to use. I would strongly warn against
it, as delicate, sentimental things can get broken or lost at an
event. Consider that centerpiece vignettes with multiple arrangements
and props means perhaps more flowers utilized and definitely more
time spent decorating. This means higher costs. Even when there are
fewer flowers in smaller vessels, there are still often multiples on
each table or display. Also the flowers that define this look are
more high-end flowers, and therefor more costly – Roses, Garden
Roses, Peonies, Hydrangea, Ranunculus.
But aside from the expenses and
efforts, “Shabby Chic” is a lovely look for a wedding. The
charming romanticism and playful whimsy make for attractive and
visually interesting decoration. And, of course, the usual soft color
palette lends itself well for weddings. It is a creative way to
acknowledge things past while looking to your bright, new future
together. So I say, in with the old!

Happy New Year!
Even though I've been decorating events for many years, every now and then I'm still surprised by something new. Usually the main person I'm consulting with in deciding the decoration for a wedding is the bride. Sometimes her mother, a bridesmaid or fiancé will give some input, but mostly the bride is the driving force.
Although one of the last weddings we
decorated in 2012 was organized by only the groom! The bride was in
South America – where they will have a second wedding at a later
time. For the stateside celebration it was left all to the groom,
with a few guiding emails from the bride.
In making the
affair to be to her liking he made great efforts. So, I was happy to help him with
suggestions for details he hadn't considered. In the end everything
worked out beautifully. I hope that this year holds even more such
interesting and pleasant surprises!
The following is his letter to
me.
"I want to express my sincerest gratitude and appreciation for the beautiful floral arrangements at my wedding. They received numerous compliments from (very discerning) members of both families, and I thought the altar table was perfect. Thank you for helping to make your first 'groom-only' client successful in his wedding planning endeavors. (The Bride) adored the bouquet."

Happy Halloween!
Here's to fright-free weddings! No beastly bridesmaid dresses, gruesomely behaved guests or villainous venues! Just, as always, beautiful flowers!

FALLING FOR FALL
I love the Fall! I love the slight
chill in the air, pulling on the first pullover of the season and the
homey scents of fireplaces, apples and fallen leaves. I also love
decorating events using rich autumnal colors - fiery Reds, Deep
Burgundies and Purples, vibrant Oranges and Yellows and even Naturals
and Browns. Yes, you can still decorate your wedding in light pink if
you wish. But if you're inclined, embracing some of the colors of the
season is also very pleasing.
Classic flowers we utilize throughout
the year - Roses, Calla Lilies, Hydrangeas - in autumnal tones can
lend themselves to a more more refined or lush look, especially in
combination with beautiful Damask linens and sumptuous candlelight.
Or you can have a more homespun feel by incorporating flowers such as
Dahlias, Sunflowers and Mums, perhaps in vintage pitchers or mossy
Terra Cotta pots.
Also, not to get too kitschy, but it's
sometimes fun to tastefully incorporate pumpkins or gourds into the
decoration. Maybe not necessarily with each centerpiece – although
we have done arrangements in actual pumpkins! But utilized as
groupings with column candles on window sills, with votive candles on
cocktail tables or around the base of a Place Card Table arrangement
can work well.
For more interesting textures a nice
touch is to include some pretty, little Seckle pears, Persimmons or
Berries into arrangements or as accents. Naturally colored Oak
leaves, various pods and Rose hips can also be unexpected and
attractive additions to the mix. Although, I might not use all these
elements at once. One or two in a few key places gives a nod to the
season without being overwhelming. And I would definitely take pause
with corn husks, bunches of Indian corn and bales of straw - unless
your party's theme actually is a hoedown. Then by all means, dosey
doe!

Another Recent Bride's Review Posted on The Knot
Great Florist

(updated 6/13/2012)
Shelby went above and beyond to make sure my wedding
flowers were exactly the way I had envisioned them. She was always
available by email or phone to chat and was extremely responsive to my
ideas and concerns. I choose to change my decor style only a few months
before the wedding and she was more than happy to sit down with me
again and tease out what I now wanted. She also helped me pick out
linens that matched her floral arrangements perfectly. The final total
for the day did exceed what I had originally planned on spending,
however, after walking into the ballroom and seeing the lush
centerpieces and rich linens, I thought the price was fairly reasonable
for quality. I would definitely recommend this florist to other
Philadelphia area brides.

Shelby is fabulous!! She was easy to work with. She was
open to my ideas while still adding her artistic eye to the flower
choices, colors, and arrangement set ups. She made the entire event
perfect. The floral arrangements tied together our "night in the city"
theme together perfectly!! I would strongly recommend her to others!
